He came to confront her.
She made sure he didn’t.
The Betrayal of Grady
Grady sat on the couch half listening to the two women banter across the room. Across from him sat his wife, Shara, and her best friend Monae. They had been inseparable since childhood, a bond formed growing up on the streets of Edmundson Village. Monae still lived near the village, and Grady and Shara had moved 15 minutes further up into Catonsville. Close enough that they found time to get together several times a week. Grady wondered how they stayed so close after all these years, and up until six months ago, he thought they had the perfect friendship.
But now… he knew better.
And even as he sat on the couch, the truth of it all was staring him in the face. Monae sat casually with her legs tucked under her on the couch. Her pose looked innocent… but felt intentional. Grady wanted to leave the room, even as he tried not to gaze at Monae’s long, smooth thighs. But something about the way she carried herself made looking away feel impossible. And the worst part was that she knew it. He told himself he should leave. But something unspoken held him there. He hated to admit it, but somehow, without ever agreeing to it, he had already given her control.
It was six months ago. The fateful day Grady made the biggest mistake of his life. They were hosting a BBQ, and Monae was helping in the kitchen. As she walked past, her body casually brushed against his, lingering just a second too long to be accidental.
“Feels like someone is excited to see me!” Monae laughed.
Jokes like that were not uncommon from Monae. It was a part of her personality.
Grady replied, “I’m always excited to see you, Monae.”
They laughed as she continued across the kitchen, and the moment quickly flew from Grady’s mind. Until 30 minutes later Monae found another opportunity to play. This time she stopped, stood in front of Grady, and lightly brushed her hand against him; this time impossible to misinterpret.
“Just checking to see if I still excite you!” she laughed.
As she walked away, she reached back and tapped her own ass, looked back and playfully licked her lips as she smiled. Grady was flustered and caught off guard by how quickly his body reacted. He felt the blood flow to his groin immediately and rushed into the bathroom before anyone would notice what was happening to him. He sat there rerunning the experience through his mind, trying to convince himself it didn’t mean anything. But his body did not have an innocent reaction.
Shara and Grady had just said goodbye to the last guest. Monae was the only one left, but she had never been considered a guest. Grady knew she would stay to help clean up and wouldn’t leave until everything was done. Shara walked out to the backyard to clear off the tables, and Monae seized her opportunity.
She turned to Grady and locked her eyes with his. It was a brief pause, but long enough to trap him there. He could not pull his gaze from hers. His mind was locked somewhere between confusion and something far more dangerous. Before he could react, she crossed a line that they would not come back from.
“I saw the way you reacted when I walked away…” she teased.
Grady looked at her in shocked as her hand slid down with quiet confidence, leaving no room for misunderstanding. He panicked as he looked out the window to see where Shara was. And in that panicked moment when he turned away, Monae had bent down and stolen a forbidden taste. Before his mind could register or respond she had raised back but did not let go.
“Damn! On the grill all day in the sun, and that dick still taste fresh and clean. I can’t wait until I can taste more of it!” Monae laughed.
Grady did not stop to think. His thoughts were rattled, unable to land anywhere long enough to make sense of what just happened. He turned and quickly ran up the steps before his wife came back into the house.
“Where did Grady go?” Shara asked Monae.
Monae casually replied, “He was looking a little flushed. I think he went to the restroom. It looks like we are done, Girl! So, I’m going to head on home.”
Monae kissed Shara on the cheek and left the house.
As Monae drove home and Shara sat on the couch sipping her wine, Grady was in the bathroom, unable to steady himself, even as one though kept repeating in his mind, “What the fuck was going on?”
Together, they looked like everything worked. They started their careers as teachers and were now principals of different high schools.
Shara carried herself with an easy, natural beauty. The kind that didn’t ask for attention but never went unnoticed.
Grady was hard to ignore. Handsome, tall, and solid, he had a presence that filled a room the moment he entered.
Monae was different from Shara in almost every way. Taller, sharper, more deliberate in everything she did.
Grady knew he should say something to Shara but didn’t know how. The thought of Shara finding out stopped him every time. He was conflicted. So instead of going to Shara... he went to Monae.
They agreed to meet at a coffee shop on the Pike.
Monae didn’t walk in quietly. She never did. The moment she entered, the room shifted. Grady felt it before he looked up. When he finally did… he knew he had made a mistake.
She smiled as she walked over and joined him at the table. Grady reached down deep to strengthen his resolve even as the scent of cognac and vanilla from her Angels Share perfume enticed his nostrils.
“Do you mind if I order a coffee before we get started?” she asked him casually.
He sat back and watched her walk up to the counter. He told himself not to look. That didn’t last long. He saw her differently now. That was the problem. She was intelligent. Beautiful. Successful. And Shara trusted her.
Great friend. The thought didn’t sit right anymore. She had crossed an unforgivable line. That’s not what friends do. Grady was so lost in his thoughts, he didn’t notice that Monae had returned and was watching him from across the table.
He steeled himself and started the dialogue he had rehearsed in his mind.
“Monae... We need to talk about the BBQ. What you did… that wasn’t okay. You’ve always been a good friend, but your behavior crossed a line. I don’t know what got into you, but whatever it was…”
He paused.
She didn’t respond right away. Just watched him for a moment. Then…
“You’re right, Grady.” She said softly. “It wasn’t okay. And I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I am so ashamed.”
Grady breathed a sigh of relief as he sat back in his chair. That was exactly the response he was hoping for.
Instead of staying across from him, she stood and moved to his side. As if the decision had already been made. Her hand settled on his arm. A light, deliberate touch. It changed the space between them.
“Grady, forgive me. I was wrong.” He shivered at her touch.
His body reacted to her gaze and her scent before he could stop it.
“I shouldn’t have done that to you.” Monae continued. “I need to make this right.”
Grady looked at her with a puzzled look.
“Make it up to me? Monae there is nothing to make up for. Let’s just pretend this didn’t....”
“No, Grady” she interrupted gently. “What I did... that crossed a line.”
Her voice shifted. Slower now. More controlled.
“And I did not give you anything in return.”
He should have said something.
He didn't.
